Women’s History Month: Women Who Should Be Celebrated Year-Round
In honor of March being Women’s History Month, let’s pay tribute to some women running the world and the media right now. Some are industry veterans, while others are becoming the new kids on the block. Regardless of experience, some notable women are kicking ass and taking names and deserve recognition year-round, especially during Women’s History Month.
Tory Burch has persevered as a household haute couture name for years, and with the brand name came a brand image reinforced every year since its founding in 2004. The New-York based designer shifted brand perception this past New York Fashion Week, changing from color-filled prep to muted edginess in the Fall / Winter 2023 Collection. This groundbreaking brand transformation indeed turned heads and reaffirmed the notion that you can recreate yourself or your brand whenever you want, regardless of the circumstances. Tory Burch’s purpose is to empower women and women entrepreneurs, so who better to highlight than a woman using her power to give back to other women?
Whether you know her as the new face of Loewe or as the star of the movie “Bones and All,” Taylor Russell is killing it on and off the screen. The 28-year-old Canadian actress’s emerging fame is due to her hard work, yet her style remains so effortlessly chic. As a Global Brand Ambassador of Loewe, Taylor’s tasteful style has elevated brand pieces you didn’t even know could be elevated. Loewe’s pre-Spring campaign featured the one-and-only Russell, who also opened for their Spring 2023 during Paris Fashion Week. Whether in Loewe, Alexander McQueen, Schiparelli, or Prada, Russell has been serving red carpet looks left and right. Her rise to stardom and freedom of expression through fashion is incredibly admirable during Women’s History Month.
Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the Los Angeles-based founders and head designers of Rodarte, are two female entrepreneurs in the limelight for their romanticized and innovative clothing as of late. Kate and Laura value storytelling and use their clothing to tell a story. Rodarte designers have done just that and have been storytelling since its founding in 2005. Kate and Laura continued telling a story through their Fall / Winter 2023 Collection from New York Fashion Week with their gothic fairytale theme that went viral. Let their most recent RTW collection be a lesson to all women: continue to fantasize and create or recreate your fairytales.
Most commonly known for her lead acting role in the hit television series “Wednesday,” actress Jenna Ortega has hit her stride. Her iconic role as Wednesday’s character consisted of not blinking in any scenes. However, if you blink, don’t worry because you won’t miss her: she is not going anywhere. Ortega has already signed a deal to star in a new movie, and while plot and title details are unreleased, this expert gothic girl will impress, no matter the genre. In addition to starring on Wednesday, she appeared in Scream, Jane the Virgin, and more. Latin representation on-screen is significant to Ortega so that everyone can see themselves in someone on screen. It’s good that Jenna Ortega does not seem to be going anywhere.
Last but not least, we have been blessed with a resurgence after a lengthy hiatus from the queen herself: Rihanna. You may ask yourself, “when is RiRi not crushing it?” While that may be true, the Barbados queen has been especially thriving this year (and it’s only March). Her halftime show commanded America’s full attention and awed us with her remix of some of her greatest hits. Her beauty line Fenty Beauty experienced a $5 Million profit in media value after her brief touchup during her halftime performance using her very own beauty line product. Rihanna’s success as a Black woman is critical to her as she brings children into the world. As if her halftime show was not exciting enough, Rihanna announced that she was pregnant with another baby with a pretty boy A$AP Rocky. Rihanna is a walking inspiration, no matter the month, but especially during Women’s History Month.
